Live bug bash vs async video QA

Live means a clock, a roster, and findings landing while people are still hunting. Async means testers record (or upload) on their own time and triage happens later on a timeline. Both are valid. Mixing them without a rule is how you get a “bash” that is actually three days of Looms and no recap.
What “live” is for
Use a live bug bash when you need a shared snapshot before a launch: same build, same ninety minutes, a recap with counts. Energy is a feature. So is the moderator who stops the room from becoming a product meeting.
Live also helps when the environment is fragile. If staging dies, you want one stager in the channel, not twelve people discovering it on Thursday.

What async is for
Async video QA is for distributed teams, long charters, and builds that need more than ninety minutes of exploration. Each person records, marks bugs on the timeline, and triage is a later meeting (or no meeting — just the board).
Async fails when there is no due time. “Watch this when you can” is not a bash. Put a deadline on uploads and a triage hour on the calendar anyway.
A hybrid that does not suck
Kickoff live (10 minutes). Hunt however people work — some on the widget, some recording. Recap live. That hybrid is normal. What you must not hybrid is the log: one board or one Jira label, not Slack plus spreadsheet plus three Looms.
If half the team cannot attend the hunt, they can still upload a session into the same project and mark bugs before recap. The board does not care whether the file was recorded in the room.
Choosing without a religion
